What a wonderful morning!
Around 10:00 a.m. I glanced out my bedroom window and was greeted with a
familiar face. My friend Pedro, the
Virginia Opossum, had returned! Not seen
since January 10th, the lil’ guy was sitting right outside my front
door as if waiting for me. Grabbing my
camera, I ran downstairs and snuck out the back door. Circling around to the front I was able to
snap a photo before he saw me.
It does my heart good to see
my wee pal. With the bitterly cold
weather I have been very concerned about him. Virginia Opossums are not native to Minnesota and often suffer
frostbitten ears, feet and hairless tails. Thank goodness for all the brush
piles and burrowing spots around Bon Bon Pond! Pedro seemed fine and in fact
displayed a healthy appetite. He just
adores the woodpeckers' peanut nuggets so I put a handful out just for him to enjoy.
Opossums are known as transitory mammals, moving around and rarely staying put in one place. My Pedro appears to have “strayed from the norm” and settled in around these parts. Lucky me!
