I had the most incredible experience
this morning: truly a holiday blessing. While outside refilling feeders, a female Downy Woodpecker flew over my
shoulder and perched on a suet cake holder.
Just inches from my face she settled in to enjoy her breakfast. Afraid she would fly away, I froze in place
and remained motionless. For several minutes she feasted while making chirping
sounds of contentment. Gazing into her beautiful black eyes, I saw
no fear, but rather, total trust.
Such an accomplishment! In just a few short years of feeding and
caring for the wildlife, I had managed to overcome this bird’s instinctual fear
of humans. What a wonderful
Christmastime gift!
