Canada Geese Family Reunion
This year’s get-together was
much smaller than last year’s extravaganza with only 32 participants compared to
over 100 waterfowl in 2012. I wasn’t
surprised at the low turnout since the Canada Goose population in this part of
the St. Croix River Valley is low this year.
On account of the late spring, many resident geese, anxious to nest, decided to move on to
warmer climes.
It would take more than snow
and ice, however, to keep William and Leona, our primary nesting pair, away
from their beloved pond. They chose to
delay nesting till the water opened up so this year their offspring were
smaller than those of their relatives.
It was good to see the visitors
and we had a lovely day. The mini flocks
left around 7:00 p.m., full of corn, and, no doubt, gossip about rambunctious
youngsters and life around other waterways.
In autumn the guests should
return. In fact, last year geese flew in
from every direction nearly every day until fall migration.
The welcome mat is always out
at Bon Bon Pond.
I am so jealous that you get to look outside your door and see this. Lucky ! Lucky! Lucky!!
